Record levels of water flow are expected to surpass decade-old levels at the Birpur barrage on the Kosi river in Supaul and the Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak river in West Champaran. This has raised serious concerns about potential flooding among officials and residents in low-lying areas across 14 districts. The threat of flooding is due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of rivers in north Bihar, both in Nepal and within their own basins. Water discharge through the Birpur barrage increased from 4.80 lakh cusecs to 5.31 lakh cusecs by 2pm on Saturday, while the discharge through the Valmikinagar barrage rose from 3.84 lakh cusecs to 4.49 lakh cusecs during the same timeframe. The Kosi river converges with the Ganga river in Katihar district, while the Gandak river meets the Ganga river to the north of Patna. As a result, Bhagalpur and Katihar districts are expected to be the most severely affected by the floodwaters. In response, the Supaul district administration has begun making announcements through public address systems, urging residents in villages between the Kosi embankments to move to higher ground. The state water resources department has issued a high alert to relevant district officials, instructing them to be prepared for the situation and to monitor embankments closely. Official leaves have been canceled as a precaution. The WRD anticipates the water discharge through the Birpur barrage to reach 6.81 lakh cusecs by Saturday night, nearing the highest recorded discharge of 7.25 lakh cusecs 56 years ago. The discharge through the Valmikinagar barrage is also expected to approach levels unseen in two decades. The 14 districts on high alert include Supaul, Saharsa, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, and Katihar due to the rising levels of the Kosi river. The districts of Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur are experiencing flooding due to the rising waters of the Gandak River. Furthermore, the Bagmati River is also threatening flooding in Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Muzaffarpur districts, among others.
